Why Low Tide Is a Great Time to Take Family Photos
Sunrise beach portraits + tidepool adventures in Marin County
As a Marin County family photographer, I’m always chasing the perfect combination of light, setting, and authentic connection—and sunrise at low tide delivers it all. There's something magical about those early morning moments at the beach: the soft light just peeking over the horizon, the quiet calm before the day begins, and the endless treasures left behind by the retreating tide.
Recently, I had the joy of photographing a beautiful family session on a quiet Marin beach during low tide. We started the morning with relaxed beach portraits along the shoreline, the golden glow of sunrise illuminating the soft waves and wet sand (Image 1: Family walking along the shoreline, golden sky in background). The kids were still a little sleepy, which made for some sweet, snuggly moments with their parents.
We started our session with some playful beach photos—barefoot toes in the sand, parents swinging their kids, laughter blending with the sound of gentle waves. There’s no pressure to pose too much during these sessions. Instead, I focus on capturing the natural moments—snuggles, smiles, and a little bit of sandy chaos.
Once we’d explored the open beach, we turned our attention to the tidepools. This part is always a favorite with kids—and let’s be honest, adults too. The rocky pools were full of sea life: vibrant purple starfish, little fish darting between crevices, sea anemones opening and closing like tiny underwater flowers. The wonder on the kids’ faces said it all.
One of the best things about scheduling your family photo session during low tide is that the adventure doesn’t stop when the camera goes away. After our time together, this family stayed to explore more, snack on the beach, and enjoy a slow morning by the ocean. It was relaxed, memorable, and exactly what I hope for in every session.
