The Best Time for Fall Family & Senior Photos in Marin and Sonoma County: September, October, or November?
Hi friends! Every fall, one question lands in my inbox more than any other: "When should we book our session?" And I love that question, because the answer is actually more interesting than most people expect. Fall in Marin and Sonoma County doesn't flip a switch and change overnight. It shifts gradually, month by month, and each part of the season brings its own personality. So instead of giving you a one-size-fits-all answer, let me walk you through what each month actually looks like, so you can choose the timing that fits your family or your senior's style.
Fall Looks Different Here - and That's a Good Thing
One of the things I appreciate most about photographing families and seniors in this part of California is that our landscape doesn't behave like the rest of the country. There's no single weekend when the leaves peak and then it's over. The golden hills, the dramatic coastlines, the redwoods, the colorful downtown streets - they each have their own season within the season.
That means there's genuinely a right time for your vision, whether you're dreaming of a warm beach evening, moody autumn skies, or rich fall color mixed with the first hints of green hills.
The key is knowing what to expect from each month so you can plan around it.
September: Golden Hills, Beach Sessions, and Warm Evenings
If I had to choose one month that's the easiest to plan around, September would be it.
The rolling hills are still glowing from summer, giving you that iconic golden California backdrop. The evenings stay warm, sunsets arrive later, and the weather is about as reliable as it gets around here. That combination makes scheduling feel a lot more flexible, especially for busy families juggling kids' activities and work schedules.
September is a great fit if you love:
Golden California hills
Beach sessions along the coast
Warm evenings with later sunset times
A little more flexibility with scheduling
It's also one of the best months for families with younger children. Later sunsets mean your session doesn't have to start right at bedtime, which makes a real difference when little ones are involved.
Some of my favorite September locations:
Mt. Burdell
Helen Putnam Regional Park
Rodeo Beach
Dillon Beach
Marin Headlands
Each of these spots takes full advantage of that warm evening light, and the variety means we can find a backdrop that feels personal to your family's story.
October: A Little of Everything
October is probably the most unpredictable month of the three, and honestly, that's part of what makes it so beautiful.
Some years we get warm, sunny evenings well into October. Other years the first fall storms roll in early. That shifting weather creates incredible variety - you'll find golden grasses still holding on throughout Marin while some trees start showing early fall color, especially in downtown areas and parks with deciduous trees. And when the clouds move in? Those overcast evenings produce dramatic skies that photograph in a way clear days simply can't match.
October works beautifully if you love:
A mix of golden hills and early fall color
Dramatic clouds and colorful sunsets
Cooler temperatures
Images with a little more mood and variety
It's also a fantastic month for senior portraits. Students have settled into the school year, the busy holiday season hasn't hit yet, and there's still enough daylight to work with.
Some of my favorite October locations:
Downtown Petaluma
Sonoma Plaza
Redwoods in San Geronimo or Roy's Redwoods
The redwoods are especially worth mentioning here because they're genuinely stunning throughout the entire fall season. Their deep greens stay consistent, and the softer autumn light creates a warm, timeless look that works no matter what the weather is doing.
November: Rich Color, Possible Green Hills, and Holiday Photos
November looks different every single year, and that's part of its charm.
If October brings a few good rainstorms, the hills often start turning green just as many trees are hitting their peak fall color. That combination - warm autumn tones in the trees alongside freshly green hills - is one of my personal favorites. It feels like two seasons at once, and the images have a richness that's hard to replicate any other time of year.
If October stays dry, you'll still find golden landscapes with pockets of colorful trees scattered throughout the area.
The one thing that changes reliably in November is daylight. Sunset arrives much earlier, so sessions often need to start before many people finish work. Planning ahead - and being a little flexible with your schedule - becomes especially important this month.
November is a wonderful choice if you want:
Beautiful peak fall color
The possibility of green hills after early rain
Holiday card photos
Cooler, crisper weather
End-of-season senior portraits once fall sports wrap up
That last point matters for a lot of high school seniors. Once sports schedules wind down, there's finally room in the calendar for a relaxed portrait session without the pressure of squeezing it in between games and practices.
Some of my favorite November locations:
Downtown Petaluma
Sonoma Plaza
Wineries
Tree farms
Locations that turn beautifully green after early rains
So, Which Month Is Right for You?
Here's a quick way to think about it:
Choose September if you love:
Golden hills and warm California light
Beach sessions
Flexible scheduling and later sunsets
Choose October if you love:
Variety and a little unpredictability
Dramatic skies and early fall color
A great window for senior portraits
Choose November if you love:
Peak autumn feeling and rich color
Holiday card photos
The chance of green hills mixed with fall foliage
No matter which month you choose, we'll find a location that fits the season and the look you're envisioning. Every family and every senior has a different style, and one of my favorite parts of planning your session is helping you figure out the perfect backdrop for your specific story.
